Data mining is the targeted search for (statistical) connections in large collections of data for scientific or commercial purposes. Such a collection of data can be formed by registering events in a practical situation (purchasing behavior of consumers, symptoms in patients, etc.) or by comparing and reinterpreting the results of previously conducted scientific studies. The name stems from the similarities between looking for statistical connections and digging (mining) for something valuable in a large mountain. Data mining helps companies and scientists to select the essential information from data. It can be used to create a model that can predict the behavior of people or systems.
